White Onyx is a translucent calcite stone formed through successive deposits of calcium carbonate from mineral-rich water. Changes in mineral content and conditions during formation create its characteristic bands, clouding and tonal variation, with each cut exposing a different section of the stone's geological record. Translucent calcite stones have been shaped into vessels since antiquity, with surviving examples dating to ancient Egypt. Dusk & Dawn applies this historic material to a contemporary form. Each vessel is carved from natural White Onyx and hand-finished to approximately eight-millimetre walls, allowing light from the flame to pass through the stone while retaining its natural veining, banding and variation. Natural fissures and differences in density require each piece to be cut, hollowed and finished individually.
