Description

Pink Onyx is a translucent calcite stone formed as mineral-rich water deposits successive layers of calcium carbonate. Pure calcite is white or clear; trace minerals introduced during formation produce the pink, blush and cream tones held within the stone, while changes in water flow and mineral content create its characteristic bands and clouding. Translucent calcite stones have been used for architectural and decorative objects since antiquity, valued in part for the way thin sections transmit light. Mangalam applies the material to a contemporary vessel, carved from natural Pink Onyx and hand-finished to approximately eight-millimetre walls. Its colour, veining and translucency continue through the stone rather than sitting on its surface, requiring each piece to be cut, hollowed and finished according to its individual formation.
